The star L02 Pup is designated an Asymptotic Giant Branch Star on Simbad, but it is far from clear that it is indeed in the AGB phase of evolution. In a paper published in 2024 (https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/full_html/2024/12/aa52173-24/aa52173-24.html), I analysed observational evidence to discriminate between the RGB and AGB status. Based on the available evidence, I concluded that "it is more likely to be an RGB star than an AGB star". The Wikipedia entry also mentions the RGB evolutionary state, citing my paper (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L2_Puppis). A literature review revealed that the assignment to the AGB seems to have evolved gradually rather than originating in a single paper that examines discriminatory observables. Thus, it would be safer to assign L02 Pup to a red giant star (leaving open whether it is on the RGB or AGB).
