The Search for Companions of BD+68°946
GJ 687 (BD+68°946) was unambiguously found to possess a Neptune-mass planet in 2014, but that was not the first time a companion had been reported for it. Many astronomy papers published prior to 1995 indicated that GJ 687 was a spectroscopic or astrometric binary, or that it had a substellar companion massive enough to be what we would call a brown dwarf. These were false positive detections caused by various errors. A referenced chronology of the search for a companion to GJ 687 appears at the following link to the CosmoQuest forum.
