Brief discussions of the name's etymology appear in Kunitzsch & Smart (2006) and Allen (1899) in English, and in Ideler (1809) in German. The name is indigenous Arabian, first reported at least as far back as al-Qazwini's (1276) 'Aja'ib al-Makhluqat (The Wonders of Creation), and possibly as early as al-Sufi (964), however I have been unable to confirm this in Ihsan Hafez's (2010 PhD thesis, James Cook University) translation of al-Sufi's "Book of the Fixed stars". The modern spelling goes back as far as Piazzi's (1814) Palermo catalog.
