Xi And (HR 390) has been known by the proper name "Adhil" in numerous astronomical references going as far back as the Almagest. Remarkably the spelling has remained unchanged since at least the 13th century. References:
(1) Tabule Astronomice Alfonsi Regis (1492), print of "Alfonsine Tables" (1252) ["adhil" applied to 21st star in Andromeda, which Jaschek (1987) and Manitius (1913) identify as HR 390 = xi And].
(2) Claudius Ptolemaeus "Almagestum" (1515) Latin translation by Petrus Liechtenstein) ["adhil" applied to 21st star in Andromeda, which Jaschek (1987) and Manitius (1913) identify as HR 390 = xi And].
(3) Giovanni Battista Riccioli (1651) "Almagestum Novum" ["Adhil"].

The history of the name is discussed by Allen (1899) and Kunitzsch & Smart (2006).
It has been noted that the name "Adhil" was attached to other stars by Bayer (1603; assigned to b Peg, whose cross-ID is unknown) and Bode (1801; assigned to 60 And), however all the references provided over the past century assign the star specifially to Xi And. The mentions of "Adhil" in the Almagest and Alfonsine Tables match specifically to Xi And (following Jaschek's and Manituius's cross-identification of Ptolemy's 21st star in Andromeda to Xi And). Hence the Bayer and Bode "Adhils" appear to be misattributions.
