The origin of the name is reviewed by Allen (1899) and Kunitzsch & Smart (2006). Dekker (2000) reports the name "Patancaitoz" ascribed to Zeta Ceti on a medieval "Caird" astrolabe (NMM AST0570) dated to the year 1230. The name "Batenkaiton" appears in the Alphonsine Tables from the 1260s (see discussion in Kunitzsch (1986; Journal for the History of Astronomy, Vol.17, No.49).
