Knobel (1895; MNRAS 55, 429) reports that Eta Oph was called "Al Sabyk al Thanih" in a 17th century star catalog written by Mohammad Al Achsasi Al Mouakket (Sheikh of the Grand Mosque at the College at Cairo), whose tables appear to mostly be based on the star catalog of Al Tizini (1534, Damascus).
