These notes were motivated by comments posted on the DeepSkyHunters by amateur astronomers who were unable to locate Collinder 469 using published positions for the cluster.
The current SIMBAD position for
Collinder 469
(18 16.4 -18 13 ; J2000;
queried 6 Sept 2010) is 6'.16 away from the
Dias et al. 2002
(V3.0)
catalog position (18 16 34 -18 18 42; J2000) for the cluster. There is
no obvious clustering at the SIMBAD position seen on the Digitized Sky
Survey, however this is a very obvious stellar concentration at the
Dias et al. 2002 position for Collinder 469. The source of the
inconsistent position for the Col 469 cluster appears to be
Alter+ 1970
(VII/5A/catalog recno 35) which lists the cluster at 18 13.5 -18
14 (B1950) which translates to 18 16.4 -18 13 (J2000) - exactly the
current (6 Sept 2010) SIMBAD position.
Ruprecht+1983
listed the same
position. Lynga 1987 (VII/92A/catalog recno 784) listed a slightly
different, but still apparently inconsistent position: 18 13.5 -18 13
(B1950) which translates to 18 16.4 -18 12 (J2000). I could find no
special notes on Collinder 469 in the Dias et al. online notes:
http://www.astro.iag.usp.br/~wilton/. SIMBAD currently does not have a
cluster entry within a few arcminutes of the very obvious stellar
concentration at the position of the Dias+2002 entry for Collinder
469. RECOMMENDATION: Update the SIMBAD position for "Collinder 469" to
the position for the cluster listed in Dias+2002: 18 16 34 -18 18 42
(J2000).
